Instructors

Julian Baggini, PhD, is a British philosopher and writer, as well as editor of The Philosophers' Magazine. His books include The Pig That Wants to Be Eaten: And Ninety-Nine Other Thought Experiments and Welcome to Everytown. He has also written for publications such as The Guardian, The Independent, and The Observer.


Charles Echelbarger, PhD, is Professor of Philosophy at SUNY Oswego and is interested in many areas of philosophy, including the work of Wilfrid Sellars and David Hume, as well as various topics in epistemology and philosophy of mind. He is currently the Reviews Editor of Philosophy Now magazine and one of its U.S. Editors.


Tom Flynn is editor of Free Inquiry, the nation’s largest-circulation secular humanist magazine, and an outspoken atheist and secular humanist activist. He co-founded the Secular Humanist Bulletin and designed the museum at the birthplace of nineteenth century agnostic orator Robert Green Ingersoll in Dresden, New York.


R. Joseph Hoffmann, PhD, is an historian specializing in the social and intellectual development of early Christianity. He has been Chair of the Committee for the Scientific Examination of Religion (CSER) since 2003 and also currently serves as Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Educational Programs at the Center for Inquiry.


David Koepsell, JD, PhD, is the executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, an associate editor of Free Inquiry, and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is currently also serving as a Donaghue Initiative Visiting Professor at Yale University.


Paul Kurtz, PhD, is Editor-in-Chief of Free Inquiry, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and Chairman of the Center for Inquiry/Transnational. For forty years, Kurtz has remained the leading organizational and intellectual figure in the humanist and skeptical movement.


Joe Nickell, PhD, is Senior Research Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (formerly CSICOP) and a member of the Editorial Board of Skeptical Inquirer magazine. A former professional stage magician and private detective, Dr. Nickell is a world-renowned investigator of claims of the paranormal and the author of several books.


John Shook, PhD, is Vice President for Research and Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Inquiry Transnational. Among his current responsibilities are the Center for Inquiry’s Naturalism Research Project and the expansion of the Center’s Jo Ann Boydston Library of American Philosophical Naturalism.


Mitchell Stephens, a professor of journalism at New York University, is the author of a number of books including A History of News. Professor Stephens is also one of five editors of Covering Catastrophe: Broadcast Journalists Report September 11. He has published two textbooks: Broadcast News and (with Gerald Lanson) Writing and Reporting the News. His commentaries have aired on NPR's "On the Media." Stephens has been history consultant to the Newseum. He is currently writing a history of disbelief for Carroll and Graf.


Jeremy Stangroom, PhD, is a British writer, editor, and web site designer. He is an editor and co-founder, with Julian Baggini, of The Philosophers' Magazine, and has written and edited several philosophy books. He is also co-founder and webmaster of Butterflies and Wheels.


Ophelia Benson is co-author (with Jeremy Stangroom) of The Dictionary of Fashionable Nonsense: A Guide for Edgy People and Why Truth Matters. She is the editor of the web site Butterflies and Wheels and Deputy Editor of The Philosophers' Magazine in the U.K.
